Frepe Waterfall

There is no river at this waterfall. The water comes underground from snow and rain that fell in the Shiretoko mountain range and flows out of a crack in a cliff about 100 meters high to produce an abrupt, vertical waterfall.
Because the waterfall resembles flowing tears, local people call it The Virgin's Tears (Otome no Namida).
It takes about 20 minutes one way to walk there along the trail from the Shiretoko Nature Center.

旅のメモ

  • Please use the parking and toilet facilities at the Shiretoko Nature Center.
  • During the snow season, you can trek there on cross-country skis or snowshoes.
  • There is another waterfall nearby that has become known in recent years as The Man's Tears, but it is not possible to go there on land. You will need to view it from the sea on a sightseeing boat or other vessel.
