- オロンコ岩 -
This rock is named after the Oronko people, an ethnic group that once lived in this area.
It is a huge rock of 60 meters elevation located near Utoro harbor.
If you climb the steep rock staircase of around 170 steps to the flat summit, you will see the rocky reef below that appears to dissolve in the clear blue Sea of Okhotsk, the town of Utoro, and the Shiretoko mountain range.
※1 Takeshiro Matsuura was a Hokkaido explorer and even originated the name Hokkaido. He visited Shiretoko three times and his "Shiretoko Diary" made this region more widely known. The monument to Matsuura was erected in 1988 on the 100th anniversary of his death.
